Vista Summer Associates Get the Cameras Rolling!

JC and Alexis on set filming Broll
Picture
Our Opportunity Santa Fe VISTA Summer Associates got hands-on experience handing recording equipment, mics, lighting and and visual composition. Learning on set and gaining first-hand knowledge of how to film, how to frame shots and how to manipulate lighting are critical skills in the film industry.
Roll Camera! Reds and yellows blazed from the Aztec dragons winding their way down the pillars in Footbridges Park between Alto Street and West Alameda. The bright colours of the murals created a rich tapestry over-looking the lawns and the first interview for the Guadalupe Street Reconstruction documentary, Jerry Richardson. Richardson is head of the Guadalupe Historic Neighbourhood Association and gave his insights into the history of the district and how the road reconstruction project will affect the area.

Later in the morning after filming with Richardson, the VISTA Summer Associates got a chance to sharpen their filming claws practicing shooting B-roll. B-roll footage is supplemental or alternative footage from the main shoot. It is the flesh to the skeleton of the dialogue and is another way of narrating the story of this documentary while giving viewers a sense of what Santa Fe is really like.

JC and Alexis got hands-on training and experience in how to shoot, what are the most interesting shots and how to tell a story in a single shot. During shooting, local artist, Carlos Cervantes, came to work on the murals he had created thirty years and ago. The mural restoration efforts are part of a community-wide initiative to make improvements and engage community members, families, students, and local businesses in neighborhood improvements. The Santa Fe Realtors' Association, the Boys and Girls Club, and Community Learning Network have been working together to support the mural restoration effort and park improvements in the area, as well as volunteer and neighborhood engagement events!

Meet the Summer Associates!

For the first time ever, New Mexico TechWorks and the Community Learning Network have engaged Opportunity Santa Fe Americorps VISTA Summer Associates for ten and eight week programs for the summer! We are partnering with Xerb.tv to create a fun-filled but educational summer for our three Associates. JC, Alexis and Liz all live in Santa Fe and decided to join us to learn more about the world of technology in New Mexico and to increase their skills in coding and multi-media. We are so grateful to have these wonderfully talented young people working with us!

On the job
We would not be able to pull this educational film off without the help of our Opportunity Santa Fe VISTA Summer Associates. As part of their learning program this summer, they are getting hands on experience filming interviews and learning about film and digital photography, vidoeography, and editing through a series of practical workshops to teach our Summer Associates, interns, and NM Youth Ambassadors how to compose a shot, manipulate lighting and record audio to create ambiance. Many of the shots in this documentary will be captured by our VISTA Summer Associates, showing off their skill and what they have learned. We hope that at the end of this summer, our budding young filmmakers will take away what they have learned on this project and change the world with their vision through digital media.

Special thanks to Patti and Don Meccia for their talent and care in repairing the painted facial features of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Neighbors took it upon themselves to tend to the graffiti in the historic Guadalupe neighborhood, where the community is working on a number of community improvement efforts that include engagement and input from neighbors, local community members, and the City, as well as local businesses, nonprofits, schools, and service organizations.

Guadalupe neighbor and local artist Patrica Carol Meccia repairs local graffiti.
