2021 - WPI Student Team and Project
WPI Emergency Response Team (WERT)

Project Overview:  The State of New Mexico employs half a dozen different systems to manage incidents in the State and to inform the emergency responders and the traveling public about real time situations on the roadway network.

  • The 911 system is used to dispatch emergency vehicles to incident locations through 33 dispatch centers
  • The 511 system is used to inform the public about roadway issues (through the NMroads application)

Unfortunately, at this time, 511 and 911 don’t talk to each other. Paradoxically, a 911 dispatch could send an emergency vehicle down a path that is actually blocked by an accident, which the 511 system would know about. The current state of technological advances would allow for all of these systems to communicate with each other in real time to provide a 100% accurate account of the situation on the ground anywhere anytime. This project could be the FIRST to merge multiple emergency systems to provide a reliable unified emergency platform for the state of New Mexico (and the nation). The WERT students will be learning about Emergency Response systems and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and national and regional architecture along with service packages .

Project Goal: More accurate and responsive emergency services

Project Objective:
Consolidate disparate systems that support emergency services into a seamless environment.  These systems include those that support emergency dispatch (NM 911) and travelers information/road conditions (NM 511/NMRoads). The consolidated environment will be the individual Dispatch Centers within New Mexico.
